Everyday Conversations

We spend hours talking everyday. We talk at work, we talk to store clerks, strangers in places, family phone calls. We talk to each other… do we really have the conversations we crave? Conversations about us, not what needs to happen at home, things to fix, errands to do, chores to complete. We don’t need to have those conversations be our only ones. Let’s plan some couple conversations.

Pillow Talk: Yes, chatting while laying in bed. Turn off the lights, fluff up your pillows, roll towards each other. If you can, open the curtains and the window so the light of the moon shines in and the sweet sounds of the night drift softly in. Pillow talk is about secrets of the heart. Whisper, giggle, for there is much to giggle at in the dark. Try to identify the sounds hiding in the dark yard, or busy street. If there is a storm, watch it together, count the seconds between  lightening and thunder. Recall stories from your childhood of storms and under the bed monsters, of wild and childish beliefs. Sneak to the kitchen, in the dark, raid the refidge, it’s light being the only one on and tell more stories. Whisper so your heads are close together, eat your snack on the porch or deck, in the dark and talk about the stars above….Pillow talk.

Remembering Talk: Did you know, talking about when and how you met, fell in love and came to be brings you closer together? True. Your couple past is filled with magical moments otherwise you would not be where you are now. Tell the stories to yourselves often. Go over it again and again and be sure to mention how your heart fluttered when the other came into the room. Relive the first kiss, the softness or the passion or even how mischievous it was! Ahh, the good times, romance and wonder! Now look into each others eyes, hold that gaze, deep, and let it soften…there it is. It is all still there. Do this often.

Wouldn’t it Talk: This is more that a planning conversation. It is about ideas and wishes. Wouldn’t it be fun….wouldn’t that be great… we could…. and it would be…let’s plan…                      Maybe you will really do it, maybe not. Some great ideas come from this and some wild ideas that maybe you should actually do. We love to talk about trips and food we want to eat and restaurants to go visit, garden ideas, home remodeling. This is best done after dinner, eaten on the deck or patio.  Sobremesa is the Spanish word for when you keep talking after the meal has ended with the people who shared your meal. Sip a perfect cup of coffee or finish your wine, pour another for la sobremesa is when the talk and the laughter are just more food and drink- it is the whole experience.
